Lizzie Velasquez is a 24 year old American from Texas. What makes her so individual is a incredibly rare condition that only two other people are known to have. It is so rare that it does not even have a name. That condition means that she has zero percent body fat and will never and has never weighed any more than 64 pounds. To put it simply, she is basically unable to gain any weight no matter what, and is required to eat many small meals throughout the day, averaging a meal every 15 minutes.
Why am I waffling on about all this anyway? Not only is this information so interesting to hear about; there are more than many reasons why Lizzie deserves mentioning. I discovered her by stumbling across a motivational speech she was giving to an audience during one of my late-night internet searches (we've all had one of them - right?). During it she discusses how her condition left her able to motivate hundreds of people whilst becoming a motivational speaker, and it definitely has not only motivated me, but has hit a very soft spot too hearing the things she has to share...
Admittedly, I had seen this girl on the internet before; but for completely the wrong reasons. I knew exactly what she was referring to when she shares with us in the speech about finding a YouTube video titled "Ugliest Woman in the World" containing an 8 second clip of her photo. I distinctly remember watching that video myself and not one thought entered my mind about who this woman was, and how she might feel if she found the video. I just simply was looking at an image to what claimed to be... the 'ugliest woman in the world'.
Taking a look into the world of Lizzie, and pushing aside what others had to say, this speech she was giving did not only teach me that you should always think about how what you are doing and taking part in might affect someone, but something else. "What defines you?" Lizzie tells us to ask ourselves. Despite the fact Lizzie has grown up and dealt with bullying day after day, lives with the same condition day after day, and copes with the society we have today day after day; she simply refuses to let any negativity that people and life throws at her. She proves to us how easy it is to take in negativity, and spit out all the positivity from it you can.
I know what you're thinking. You've heard that many times before, right? The same old cliche advice that probably isn't even taken in because it is said so much. Well so have I. But seeing somebody who has to deal with as much as she has, I couldn't have found it any easier to do since.
If you could take every single insult that you've ever received and turn it into something you can grow by, how much happier do you think you'll be? Very much, that's how. Lizzie herself laughs and mocks at those who tell her that she's too skinny - simply because she's aloud to eat as much cake as she wants and they can't. I laugh and mock those who tell me I weigh too much - simply because I've got the big boobs they'll never have. YOU might laugh and mock those who call you 'brace frace' - simply because they will not have the smile you will in a years or two time. Heck, it could be anything. Lizzie hears people make comments on her eyes due to being one-sighted. Do you know what she tells them? - HALF PRICE CONTACT LENSES!
In short, what this blog post is trying to achieve is your understanding of how what people say and think is completely irrelevant to your happiness. Take whatever it is that is aimed to make you feel negative, and turn it completely upside down. It will work absolute wonders for you and your life.
